"Morgan was wounded on May 8, 1864 at White Hall near Spottsylvania Courthouse and died the following day while serving in the Confederate Army in Troop B. According to his comrades, Morgan was sitting with his back to a tree when a Union sniper in a distant tree shot him. He was buried nearby, but in the ensuing Summer, his father sent a wagon to recover the body and bring it to Wardensville where it was re-interred in the town cemetery Morgan planned to prepare for the Lutheran ministry.
